The Merle Chronicles are a series of connected stories based in an original fantasy setting.  The main character, Merle, is a wanderer with a colorful, criminal past, hoping to make his way in the world and somehow fit in with the rest of society.  He is certainly not a hero, and he has no lofty goals to pursue, no epic battles to fight… except, perhaps, the struggle to control his own temper (which he calls the Bad Thing). 

In his attempts to find a place in the civilized world, he meets a “village fool” named Sam, and he is struck by the man’s innocence and the cruelty of those around him.  Together, they head off into the world, shedding their old lives in the hopes of starting something fresh and new.  Sam becomes the only real friend Merle ever had, embodies the innocence he was denied even in childhood, and he will do anything to keep that bond whole, pure and sacred.
